Rating System/Review Policy

Review Policy

I am happy to accept physical and electronic ARCs and published books in exchange for a review to be posted on my blog if contacted through the Contacts page. I will respond to requests for books that I am interested in. Accepting a book does not mean that I will publish a review. Although I do read a wide variety of genres, I will prioritise those which I am most interested in. Please see my About page for more information.

Please be aware that I do work full time with other commitments so I may not always be able to respond immediately, although I will endeavour to get back to you as quickly as I can. This blog is a hobby for me to express my opinions on reading.

All my reviews are my own opinion and will be as well balanced as possible. When contacting me, please provide the following details: Book Title and Author, Publication Date, Genre, Plot Summary, requested review timescale.

My Review Method

I’ve tried a few different review systems privately, but I’m trying to slim it down. I am currently using a STAR rating out of 5.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

5 Star: I loved this book. It was incredibly original and I couldn’t fault it! I would highly recommend it to others.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

4 Star: I thought this book was really good. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would definitely recommend it to others.

Rating: 3 out of 5.

3 Star: I thought this book was good. I enjoyed reading it and would recommend it to others.

Rating: 2 out of 5.

2 Star: I finished this book and liked parts of it, or could appreciate aspects of it, but overall it wasn’t for me. I’m not likely to recommend it to others.

Rating: 1 out of 5.

1 Star: I didn’t enjoy this book.

I don’t tend to give 1 Star reviews as I will have normally DNFed it if I really don’t like it. My star ratings are thoroughly subjective and may not correspond to another’s judgement – that’s fine! We all have different tastes and opinions. When I give a review, I will always try to keep it as balanced as possible and be able to justify this choice, while remaining respectful and honest. I appreciate the time that all authors have put into their work.

For blog tours, I don’t generally give star ratings as I try to write a more detailed review and publish it to social media, tagging the tour organiser and author. If I am writing a review for a blog tour and you would like to me attach a rating, please don’t hesitate to ask.

In earlier reviews up to September 2020: To review books, I use the CAWPILE method (as detailed by Book Roast, see link for more information). This enables me to give a well rounded review and to consider a variety of aspects. These are:
-Characters
-Atmosphere
-Writing Style
-Plot
-Intrigue
-Logic
-Enjoyment
All of these aspects will be marked out of 10 and an average score created. These will then be assigned a corresponding star rating out of 5.
