Top 5 Tuesday: Top 5 Retellings

Top 5 Tuesday was created by Shanah at Bionic Book Worm, but now it is hosted by Meeghan at Meeghan Reads.

It’s now September. I love September as the weather is still normally quite nice (for Britain) and it’s my birthday month!

The first Top 5 of September is all about retellings. I’m not sure how many retellings I actually read so think I need to do a bit of research before I decide on my top 5.

Top 5 Retellings

Ayesha At Last

I’m not really one for romance but I loved this retelling of Pride and Prejudice! Based in the Muslim community in Canada, the story features vivid characters and fantastic storytelling.

Homefire

Homefire is a retelling of The Antigone and features 3 siblings who are torn apart by their decisions. I loved the story telling, the writing style and the characters.

The Bloody Chamber

the Bloody Chamber is a collection of short stories giving dark retellings of fairy tales. I’ve only read the titular story which is a retelling of Bluebeard’s Castle. I read this story for my AS Level Literature as part of a gothic fiction unit and I remember really enjoying it and would like to go back to the other stories in the collection.

Norse Mythologgy

Neil Gaiman puts his mark on Norse tales. I didn’t know much about Norse mythology before reading this book and I enjoyed it much more than I expected!

His Dark Materials

I didn’t realise that His Dark Materials is a retelling of Paradise Lost! I absolutely adore this series and I’m reading the next trilogy “The Book of Dust” when each instalment comes out.

What have been some of your favourite retellings? I’d love to know in the comments!
