WWW Wednesday – 7th April

Is it that time of the week again?! I’m halfway through my second week of the Easter holidays and it is flying by. Since finishing the tropeical readathon last week, my reading has slowed a little but I’m still powering through a few books and spending a good couple hours a day reading. I used to only ever read one book at a time, and now I regularly have 3 on the go: 1 audiobook, 1 ebook and 1 physical book.

Currently Reading

A Promised Land by Barack Obama

I have a lot of admiration for Barack Obama as I really believe that he tries to make a difference through his actions. I also adored his wife’s, Michelle Obama’s, autobiography Becoming so I have high hopes for this audiobook which is read by the author. He has such a soothing but commanding voice so I’m really enjoying listening to it. The audiobook is almost 28 hours long so I think it might be a while until I finish this one but we shall see!

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

I’ve read a couple Moriarty books before (The Husband’s Secret and What Alice Forgot) and really enjoyed them, and I’ve heard nothing but praise for Big Little Lies. I’m about 1/4 of the way through the book and so far I know that there has been a murder and I’m being introduced to all the characters, the mums, children and families surrounding one primary school. There is already a hell of a lot of drama and I’m looking forward to seeing how this lies spiral out of control. This book forms part of my 21 books for 2021 TBR.

How To Fail by Elizabeth Day

Failure is a huge stumbling block for me, as I think it is for many. Rather than making me stronger, perceived failures cause me to crack. Being back at work has been really overwhelming as there is just so much to cope with and I frequently feel like I’m failing in some respect (even though I’m not and I’m just doing my best to keep tackling everything that is thrown at me). I used a random number generator to choose this book from my 21 ebooks for 2021 list and I feel like this book has come to me at the time that I need it the most. Elizabeth Day is an author and journalist who presents a podcast of the same name where she interviews famous figures about their failures. This book is part self-help, part memoir about failures and learning from them, putting them into perspective in order to use them as a personal strength rather than weakness. I’m 30% into it. I’ve highlighted so many sections that resonate with me and sent it as a recommendation to a colleague. I think this might be a 5 star book…

Recently Read

Melmoth by Sarah Perry

This is our book club pick for this month on the theme of “one word titles”. It draws upon the folkloric figure of Melmoth the Wanderer who witnesses the atrocities of the world. Perry weaves together several atrocities and regrets spanning years, characters and countries. I listened to this book and feel like I missed the point of a few bits but I read a really interesting analysis from The Guardian which put the book into a clearer perspective for me. The writing was certainly gorgeous.

Abberton House by Debbie Ioanna

A blog tour read for me. The story takes place in 2016 and 1916 in the same house. Something happened in that house and it is now haunted by the ghosts of a family. It’s up to the new owners to discovered what happened. My review will be up on the 18th April.

The Lore of Prometheus.

I seem to be reading a lot for blog tours at the moment! The Lore of Prometheus won awards from the BBNYA 2020 and I was invited to review it for the tour. This urban fantasy follows John Carver as he returns to Kabul to train a security detail several years after serving there in the army. But Carver has a secret power that he doesn’t know about. My review will be up on the 12th April.

Next Reads

Pine by Francine Toon

This is going to be my next audiobook as I already have it out from the library. I only know this book is a gothic thriller and I’ve seen some mixed reviews, but we shall see what I make of it!

Web of Lies by Sally Rigby

Web of Lies is another blog tour book and it will be the first book my Sally Rigby that I’ve read. It’s a crime novel and the first in the Sebastian Clifford series so I’m looking forward to reading it as it is exactly the sort of book I gravitate towards!
